Self-portrait, Mixed media: charcoal, acrylic and cotton rag on canvas, 65.55 × 34.65 inches, 2025 I pinned a blank canvas to my wall and used a dowel to sketch in charcoal. Inspired by Marlene Dumas technique of painting with rags, I painted it entirely on the floor working wet into wet into the pools of water using my cotton rag.
Made Up, Mixed media: willow charcoal, gouache, makeup sponge and eraser on paper, 27 × 20 inches, 2025 In this self-portrait, I wanted to create the sensation of applying makeup to the skin in front of a mirror. Using a makeup sponge as a drawing tool turned out beautifully and it is now added to my arsenal of means.
Heatwave, Mixed media: willow charcoal, gouache, makeup sponge and eraser on paper, 29.92 × 20 inches, 2025 I love portraiture! In this piece, I used high contrast to create the illusion of scorching sunlight on her face.
A.M - P.M, Mixed media polyptych: black gouache, charcoal and white pastel on watercolor paper, 11.6 × 16.5 inches, 2025 Using two sheets of black paper (that I pre-painted using black gouache) and two sheets of white paper, I drew the same vase with flowers four times. I drew the bouquets by means of exclusively the negative shapes - drawing with white pastel on black paper and with charcoal on white paper. I didn’t draw the bouquet, I drew the shapes of nothingness around the bouquet. Through this negative shape approach, my floral arrangement seemed to just appear as if by itself.
Observational Sketches I, Black acrylic, white latex house paint on watercolor paper, 6 x 3.5 inches, 2025 I cut a large sheet of watercolor paper, that I pre-painted black, into small pieces, to make smaller sketches from observation, to practice the negative shape technique.
Observational Sketches II, Black acrylic, white latex house paint on watercolor paper, 6 x 3.5 inches, 2025 I used a bristle brush dipped in white paint, to sketch the model, changing her gestural poses every 30 seconds. My objective was to create the illusion of black drawing on a white substrate, working with white paint and paying attention to the negative space.
Observational Sketches III, Acrylic on watercolor paper, 6 x 4 inches, 2025 These sketches were done in quick-hand from observation of a live model with a large bristle brush and diluted black acrylic. Six figures were done in 30 seconds each and one in four minutes. I took the negative-space approach, and used a timer, starting each sketch with the space around the figure.
Preparatory Study I For “Fashion Week”, Mixed media: black gouache, white soft pastel on watercolor paper, 11.75 × 16.5 inches, 2025 I created this study in preparation for my colored composition “Fashion Week”. I started it by prepainting white paper with black gouache. I wanted to create the illusion that this was a black drawing on white paper.
Fashion Week, Oil pastels on toned pastel paper, 11.8 x 19.7 inches, 2025 This piece was inspired by two artists: early Wassily Kandinsky and his style of painting on black canvas, and the famous photographer Eadweard Muybridge and his studies of people in motion. I worked from one of Muybridge’s black-and-white figures, which gave me the challenge of deciding all the colors myself, and at the same time offered me complete freedom with the colour harmony.
Preparatory Study II For “Fashion Week", Mixed media: black gouache, white soft pastel on watercolor paper, 11.75 × 16.5 inches, 2025 I typically create several studies before approaching an idea that interests me. This was one of the studies where I investigated how to compose my figures. I started with white paper, painted it black, and drew on it using white pastel, to make it look like my substrate was white and my drawing was done in black.
Amnesia, mixed media: colored paper cutouts, pastel, and acrylic on canvas, 46.8 x 33 inches, 2024
White Roses, Mixed media: colored gouache and white and black pastel on watercolor paper, 16.5 × 11.5 inches, 2025 In this triptych, I found different ways to express a bouquet of white roses. I painted my sheets of paper red, pink and crimson to turn my white roses red just like the queen did in Alice In Wonderland. I used only black and white pastel to create three colorful drawings.
